Underbelly

whale songs

Hushed tones interrupted by laughter like car alarms;
Our conversations are whale songs.
You can try to listen and still miss the frequencies,
swallowed whole by a limitless ocean.

We are looking for a place where time does not exist,
my feet tripping over nerves,
but I won’t forget this dance, quiet now,
like a blip that slipped underneath the heavy fabric of the dark

Crouched in moonlit backrooms,
shadows incandescing where light doesn’t emit.
We re-open old wounds, held deep like ancient fault lines.
Sky surveyors, mapping stars under blankets of fog.
